Kate Hwang, Founder and CEO of Adaptive Warrior KC Foundation Co., first began her journey as a Kansas City Police Department officer. Unfortunately, Kate was injured on the job and sustained a career ending Traumatic Brain Injury. Since then, she has become an advocate for individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries, serving on the Missouri Council for Traumatic Brain Injury; as well as a passionate advocate for adaptive athletes. After sustaining her line of duty injury, Kate transformed her life by creating an inclusive space for individuals with disabilities to access fitness, training, and making it easy to find vital information.
As the founder of Adaptive Warrior KC Foundation Corporation 503(c)b; she combines her experience as Director in Adaptive Programming, as well her passion for coaching with a commitment to empowering others to overcome challenges and thrive. Through her experiences and community outreach, Kate continues to inspire and lead others in discovering their potential and navigating life’s limitless possibilities. Kate holds certifications in CrossFit Level 2, Adaptive & Inclusive Training (AIT), and USA Track and Field Level 1, bringing a wealth of expertise to our programs. All of our coaches are SafeSport certified, undergo rigorous background checks, and are committed to providing safe, inclusive, and high-quality coaching for athletes of all abilities.
Her dream is that Kansas City has access to inclusive spaces, places, activities, equipment, and education and coaching for all individuals with disabilities what wish to participate in being active, and living healthy lifestyles.
Championing Inclusivity
Kate Hwang is a dedicated member of the Kansas City community, recognized for her commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities. As a 2024 WIN KC Kissick Construction Game Changer Award recipient, Kate’s journey has been shaped by personal challenges, including a traumatic brain injury she sustained while serving as a police officer. This experience inspired her to transition into the adaptive sports field, where she has become a passionate advocate for inclusivity.
In her role as an Founder of Adaptive Warrior KC, Kate focuses on empowering athletes to reach their potential through sports. Her genuine desire to help others thrive and her ability to foster growth make her an invaluable resource in the community. Kate’s work not only enriches the lives of those she coaches but also strengthens the broader adaptive sports network in Kansas City.

Patti Erneste

Patti Erneste, is a seasoned educator with over 32 years of experience in the classroom and dedicated Army veteran. Drawing from her military background, Patti brings discipline, leadership, and a strong commitment to service to both her teaching and her work with Adaptive Warrior KC. Patti excels at guiding athletes while supporting and empowering individuals through education and mentorship.
As a co-founder of Adaptive Warrior KC, Patti’s mission is to create opportunities for adaptive athletes to achieve their full potential. Her unique blend of military and educational experience drives her commitment to fostering inclusion, independence, and growth in the adaptive sports community. Patti holds her certificates in Adaptive & Inclusive Training (AIT), Certified Soldier Coach (STS) and is SafeSport certified.
Patti has dedicated her life to a mission of service, from her commitment to her country and work with children to her current roles in coaching and administration at Adaptive Warrior KC. Her diverse talents and unwavering dedication continue to drive our mission forward, making a lasting impact on the community she serves.
